Newson Health - Mirena Coil Fittings

Mirena coil fitting at
Newson Health

We are pleased to offer Mirena coil fitting at
our Stratford-upon-Avon clinic

What is the Mirena coil and how does it work?

The Mirena coil is a small, flexible T-shaped device fitted into your uterus (womb). It contains a form of progestogen. The hormone is released steadily into your uterus, protecting the uterus lining from the effects of oestrogen when given as a part of your HRT. It can also work as a contraceptive, thickening the mucus from your cervix and making it difficult for sperm to reach an egg. The progestogen also thins the lining of your uterus, so that it is less likely to accept a fertilised egg and may also stop the release of an egg (ovulation) for some women.

What are the benefits of having a Mirena coil fitted?

It is a very effective way of protecting the lining of the uterus, whilst also being a very reliable contraceptive. If you are using the Mirena as part of your HRT, for endometrial protection, it can be used for five years before you need to get it replaced. While the product license for Mirena is for four years for endometrial protection, the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare supports its use for five years. It will also offer contraception during this time if it is required. In addition, it can be used as a treatment for heavy and painful periods.

Frequently asked questions

The coil is a simple procedure lasting up to 20 minutes but can sometimes be quicker.

A speculum, similar to that used when you have a cervical screening, will be inserted into your vagina and the coil inserted through your cervix into your uterus. Two fine threads attached to the bottom of the coil lie at the top of your vagina. These threads allow you and your healthcare professional to check the coil is in place and mean it can be easily removed when needed.

It’s common to experience period-like discomfort during and after the fitting, so we use a local anaesthetic gel during the procedure to help.

When you leave the clinic, you can return to your normal activity. You may
experience some bleeding, which is normal, and you can take over the counter painkillers for any period-like pain.

Coil plus fitting is £395 (one hour appointment)

Coil fitting only – where the patient supplies the coil – is £295 (one hour appointment)

Coil removal only is £195 (30-minute appointment)

Most women do not need a follow up appointment, you will be given advice
about how to check your coil yourself. However, if you would like a review
appointment to have your coil checked, you can book this too.

We are pleased to also offer a coil removal and refitting service. Removal of
a coil is a straightforward procedure. We pass a speculum and can use the local anaesthetic gel, the two fine threads attached to the coil and resting in the top of the vagina are gently pulled and the coil comes out.
