Dr Louise Newson attends British Menopause Society Conference
Published: 11th July 2019
On the 4th-5th July, the annual British Menopause Society conference took place in Kenilworth. Dr Newson was delighted to attend along with several other doctors from Newson Health Menopause and Wellbeing Centre. The programme was varied with both national and international speakers in attendance, all who are experts in their fields.
There was a superb talk by Dr Ann McGregor talking about migraines and the menopause. Many women find their migraines worsen during the menopause and Dr McGregor spoke about how the right dose of HRT, with the oestrogen being given as a general patch, can really make a huge difference to women's lives.
Many of the speakers presented data about the different types of oestrogen and progesterone available for women and there is overwhelming evidence that having oestrogen through the skin, as a patch or gel, along with micronised progesterone is the safest way of having HRT. The risks with taking this type of HRT are incredibly low and there are numerous benefits including symptom control and also reducing future risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, osteoarthritis and even dementia. There were also presentations about obesity which is so relevant as many menopausal women put on weight due to the metabolic changes that occur with low hormone levels. Here at Newson Health, we believe that management of the menopause should be holistic and healthcare professionals should be assessing women's lifestyles to work out ways to improve their nutrition, exercise and sleep as well as helping them to balance their hormones, if appropriate.
Speaking about the event, Dr Louise Newson said "It was lovely to see so many healthcare professionals there, all with an interest in the menopause. Many GPs I speak to are frustrated with the current training to become a menopause specialist and it is hoped that training for healthcare professionals will improve and change in the future so more women can access evidence-based medical care."
Newson Health Menopause and Wellbeing Centre was founded by leading menopause specialist and GP, Dr Louise Newson, and officially opened in September 2018 by Liz Earle MBE. Created to help women receive the most appropriate, individualised treatment for their perimenopause and menopause, it has quickly become a centre of excellence, providing care to women of all ages, as well as running educational events for primary care clinicians.
Dr Newson is also the founder of the Menopause Doctor website, a free resource since 2017, providing the latest unbiased, evidence based information about the menopause and perimenopause for women as well as the most recent national and international menopause articles and guidelines for healthcare professionals. The website has been adopted by the Royal College of GPs (RCGP) as an official educational library aimed at patients and healthcare professionals wishing to learn more about the menopause.
Newson Health Research and Education is a not-for-profit organisation founded by Dr Newson, from which all profits gained from the organisation's activities, such as event sponsorship, delegate fees and speaker's fees, are invested back into the business.
