World Menopause Day 2019 - The Recap
Published: 24th October 2019
This October, we held a fantastic ‘World Menopause Day’ event at Winton House, Stratford-upon-Avon; our trusty team organised a jam-packed series of lively panel discussions and lifestyle demonstrations that will soon be available to watch online, so watch this space!
Newson Health’s virtuoso team of menopause specialist GPs, Rebecca Lewis, Sarah Ball and Alice Duffy, led small group discussions alongside Dr Louise Newson, who had invited fellow menopause experts Diane Danzebrink, Meg Matthews, Jane Lewis, Jane Simpson and Katie Taylor to share their opinions, knowledge and resources to a wider audience.
Topics covered by the experts included: HRT myths, early menopause, diet and mood, heart disease, depression, menopause and cancer, urinary and vaginal symptoms, experiences for partners, and educating others about the menopause.
Our resident yoga practitioner, Lucy Holtom and nutritionist, Emma Ellice-Flint demonstrated some inspiring techniques and recipes to help keep our body and gut healthy through the menopause.
Bone health was explored with the help of Professor David Reid, a Consultant Rheumatologist and Osteoporosis Specialist, who performed a DEXA scan on willing “patient”, Meg Matthews. You will be able to watch them discuss osteoporosis and the importance of measuring bone density to understand the risk of fractures, as you go through the menopause.
Clinical Negligence lawyer, Suzanne White and Guardian journalist, Kate Muir discussed the ‘big-picture’ outlook of menopause care in the UK and why health professionals need to educate themselves, in order to give accurate up-to-date, evidence-based information that empowers women to make their own choices about treatment options.
Two new podcasts were recorded as Dr Newson chatted to Jane Simpson, continence specialist nurse, about the importance of looking after your pelvic floor and Katie Taylor, founder of menopause support Facebook group, the Latte Lounge.
We are planning to release all the amazing content from World Menopause Day as soon as we can and will let you know the details when it’s ready to view.
Now to plan how we will top this for 2020!
Newson Health Menopause and Wellbeing Centre was founded by leading menopause specialist and GP, Dr Louise Newson, and officially opened in September 2018 by Liz Earle MBE. Created to help women receive the most appropriate, individualised treatment for their perimenopause and menopause, it has quickly become a centre of excellence, providing care to women of all ages, as well as running educational events for primary care clinicians.
Dr Newson is also the founder of the Menopause Doctor website, a free resource since 2017, providing the latest unbiased, evidence based information about the menopause and perimenopause for women as well as the most recent national and international menopause articles and guidelines for healthcare professionals. The website has been adopted by the Royal College of GPs (RCGP) as an official educational library aimed at patients and healthcare professionals wishing to learn more about the menopause.
Newson Health Research and Education is a not-for-profit organisation founded by Dr Newson, from which all profits gained from the organisation's activities, such as event sponsorship, delegate fees and speaker's fees, are invested back into the business.
