Helping you take charge of your hormone health
Lifestyle medicine, and Newson Clinic’s holistic approach to hormone health

Newson Clinic is pleased to offer hormone coil fitting and removal services, including the Mirena, Kyleena, Jaydess as well as copper coils, at our flagship Stratford-upon-Avon clinic.

Need to speak to a clinician about coil choices for contraception or as a part of your HRT?

Newson Clinic offers consultations with our expert team of doctors, nurses and pharmacists for patients over the age of 18. We can discuss coil options, outlining benefits and any risks to you as an individual, as a part of an assessment of your unique experience of hormonal and contraceptive health.

We are pleased to offer hormone coil fitting and removal services at our flagship Stratford-upon-Avon clinic. Coil insertions as a part of your HRT regimen (the Mirena), or for contraception (the Mirena, Kyleena or Jaydess hormone coils, or non-hormonal copper coils), can all be undertaken by Newson Clinic. From your very first appointment, we work with you to create a personalised treatment plan and offer ongoing support via follow up appointments and annual reviews.

Mirena Coil

What is the Mirena coil and how does it work?

The Mirena coil is a small, flexible T-shaped device that is fitted into your uterus (womb). It contains a form of progesterone, which is steadily released to protect the uterus lining from the effects of oestrogen when given as part of your HRT.

It also acts as a contraceptive by thickening the mucus from your cervix, making it difficult for sperm to reach an egg. The progestogen thins the lining of your uterus, making it less likely to accept a fertilised egg. In some women, it may also stop ovulation.

What are the benefits of having a Mirena coil fitted?

The Mirena coil is a very effective way of protecting the uterus lining and is also a highly reliable form of contraception. When used for endometrial protection as part of HRT, it can remain in place for up to five years before needing to be replaced. While the product licence for Mirena is four years, the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare supports its use for five. It also continues to offer contraceptive protection during this time, if needed. If used for contraception alone it is licensed for eight years. In addition, it may help treat heavy or painful periods.

Kyleena Coil

What is the Kyleena coil and how does it work?

Kyleena is a hormone-releasing intrauterine system (IUS) used for contraception. It is a small, plastic T-shaped device that is inserted into the uterus and releases a low dose of the hormone levonorgestrel.

It prevents pregnancy by thickening the cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach an egg, and thinning the uterine lining, making it less likely for a fertilised egg to implant. Kyleena is not licensed for endometrial protection or for treating heavy periods.

What are the benefits of having a Kyleena coil fitted?

Kyleena can help make periods lighter, shorter and less painful. It may also be an effective treatment for heavy bleeding. It is a popular choice for those who want a long-acting, reversible method of contraception that is both effective and convenient.

Jaydess Coil

What is the Jaydess coil and how does it work?

The Jaydess coil is a small, hormone-releasing intrauterine device (IUD) used for contraception. It is a T-shaped plastic device that releases the hormone levonorgestrel and is licensed for use for up to three years. Jaydess is not licensed for endometrial protection or for treating heavy periods.

It works by thickening the cervical mucus, thinning the uterine lining, and making it more difficult for sperm to reach the egg. It also reduces the growth of the uterine lining, helping to prevent fertilisation and implantation.

What are the benefits of having a Jaydess coil fitted?

Jaydess offers highly effective contraception and is long-acting, lasting up to three years. It may help reduce heavy periods and, unlike some other hormonal methods, does not usually affect ovulation.

Copper Coil

What is the copper coil and how does it work?

The copper coil, also known as an intrauterine device (IUD), is a small, plastic T-shaped device wrapped in copper that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It works by releasing copper, which is toxic to sperm, and also prevents a fertilised egg from implanting in the uterine lining.

Unlike hormonal coils, the copper coil does not contain any hormones. It releases small amounts of copper that interfere with sperm movement, making fertilisation unlikely, and makes the womb lining less receptive to implantation.

What are the benefits of having a copper coil fitted?

The copper coil is a highly effective form of contraception, with a success rate of over 99%. It is a good option for those who prefer not to use hormonal methods. It also provides long-term contraception and can remain in place for five to ten years, depending on the type.
