What is the hormonal coil and how does it work as a contraceptive?
The hormonal coil is a small, flexible T-shaped device fitted into your uterus (womb). All types of hormonal coil contain a form of progestogen. The hormone is released steadily into your uterus, which thickens the mucus from your cervix and makes it difficult for sperm to reach an egg. Progestogen also thins the lining of your uterus so that it is less likely to accept a fertilised egg and may also stop the release of an egg (ovulation) for some women.
What are the benefits of having a hormonal coil fitted?
It is a very reliable contraceptive, lasting for 3-5 years depending on the brand of coil you have fitted. It can also be used as a treatment for heavy and painful periods.
What is a copper coil and how does it work as a contraceptive?
The copper coil is a T-shaped plastic device which has areas coated in copper and is fitted into your uterus. The copper stops sperm from surviving in the cervix or womb, meaning that the sperm are unable to reach an egg. The presence of the device in the womb can also stop any fertilised egg implanting.
What are the benefits of having a copper coil fitted?
The copper coil is a reliable contraceptive which lasts for 5-10 years or more depending on which type is fitted and your age at the time of fitting. The copper coil does not contain any hormone which can be preferable for some women.
What types of hormonal coil does Newson Health offer?
Mirena coil: contains a hormone called levonorgestrel, which is a type of progestogen. The Mirena can be left in place for five years, or longer if you are over the age of 45 when it is inserted and using for contraception only.
Kyleena: a slightly smaller, lower dose version of the Mirena coil which can be left in place for five years. The smaller size means the Kyleena coil may be more suitable for women who have not previously been pregnant.
Please note: both Jaydess and Kyleena are licensed for contraceptive use, but not for HRT.
Jaydess: Like Kyleena, Jaydess is a smaller, lower dose coil so again may be more suitable for women who have not previously been pregnant. It can be left in place for three years, and has the lowest dose of progestogen of all three coils we offer.

What types of copper coil does Newson Health offer?
We can offer copper coils lasting five to 10 years for contraception. Sometimes copper coils can be relied upon for more than 10 years if fitted after the age of 40.
Copper coils lasting five years tend to be smaller and can sometimes be more appropriate for women who have not had children.

How is a coil is fitted?
The coil is a simple procedure lasting up to 20 minutes, but can sometimes be quicker. A local anesthetic gel will be used to make you as comfortable as possible.
A speculum, similar to that used when you have cervical screening, will be inserted into your vagina and the coil inserted through your cervix into your uterus. Two fine threads attached to the bottom of the coil lie at the top of your vagina. These threads allow you and your health professional to check the coil is in place and mean it can be easily removed when needed.
Does it hurt having a coil fitted?
It is common that women will experience period-like discomfort during and after the fitting, so we use a local anesthetic gel during the procedure to help.
When you leave the clinic, you can return to your normal activity. You may experience some bleeding, which is normal and you can take over the counter painkillers for any period-like pain.
How much does it cost to get a coil fitted at Newson Health?
Coil plus fitting is £395 (one hour appointment)
Coil fitting only – where the patient supplies the coil – is £295 (one hour appointment)
Coil removal only is £195 (30-minute appointment)
Will I need a follow-up appointment?
Most women do not need a follow up appointment. However, if you would like a review appointment to have your coil checked, you can book this too.
Can Newson Health remove or change my coil?
Yes, we also offer a coil removal and refitting service. Removal of a coil is a straightforward procedure. We pass a speculum and can use the local anesthetic gel, the two fine threads attached to the coil and resting in the top of the vagina are gently pulled and the coil comes out.
