Psychiatry services at Newson Health

Many women find their mental health is impacted by the perimenopause and menopause. Our new psychiatry service at Newson Health offers additional support to women experiencing mental health difficulties during their menopause. The service is led by psychiatrist Dr Louisa James, who provides psychiatric assessment and expertise and will work closely with your usual Newson Health clinician to provide individualised care.

How can I access the psychiatry service at Newson Health?

Where appropriate, patients are referred to Dr James by their Newson Health clinician. A 90-minute assessment appointment will then be arranged with Dr James, who will work closely with your Newson Health clinician on your ongoing care. To request a referral, please speak to your usual Newson Health clinician.

About Dr Louisa James

MBCHb, LLM, RCPsych

Psychiatrist

Louisa is originally from North Somerset and graduated from Birmingham medical school in 1997.  She worked in many different areas of psychiatry as a junior doctor in Worcestershire and became a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2003.  During her higher training she specialised in general adult psychiatry and completed a year working in addiction psychiatry. Louisa also studied Mental Health Law at Northumbria University and obtained her LLM with commendation. Louisa has been an NHS consultant psychiatrist since 2006 and currently works in a Home Treatment service in Worcestershire.

Louisa’s interest in menopause initially came from her own personal experience.  This prompted her to learn more about the impact of hormones which soon brought her into contact with Newson Health founder Dr Louise Newson at a local training event. She began to gradually change her own practice to include assessment of menopause and noticed strikingly positive outcomes for some patients as a result.

Outside of work, Louisa is a busy mum of two teenage daughters. She loves animals and has her own dog, cats and guinea pigs. She also loves musical theatre and tries to take her daughters to shows as often as possible.
